A extensive rescue and recovery effort is actively in progress in the Caribbean waters for a duo of lost sailboats carrying humanitarian supplies journeying from the Mexican coast to Havana.

Naval Search Operations Deployed

Authorities in Mexico has deployed naval assets and military search aircraft to locate the two vessels, which were had on board a minimum of nine sailors, per a military release.

The ships had been scheduled to arrive in the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their docking, the navy said.

Context of Humanitarian Support to Cuba

The Caribbean nation has depended significantly on aid convoys from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the nation grapples with widespread nationwide blackouts.

"Both captains and crews are seasoned mariners, and each boat are equipped with proper safety equipment and signalling equipment," a spokesperson involved in the effort said.

The nine crew members are citizens of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has established contact with coast guard agencies from the involved countries along with their embassy officials.

"Our team is working closely with the authorities and remain confident in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.

Previous Humanitarian Mission

Previously that week, the government in Havana warmly welcomed and warmly received another boat that had transported a significant amount of relief supplies to the country.

That ship, dubbed "a modern Granma" in reference to the boat in which Castro came back to Cuba to start the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, delivered solar panels, medicines, infant formula, cycles and food.

Larger International Backdrop

Volunteers and NGOs have been at the forefront of attempts to bring humanitarian aid to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation was initiated.

International organizations have since raised alarms about ""severe" lack of essential goods, with in excess of 50,000 surgeries cancelled in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.

Foreign policy pressure have increased lately, with statements from several leaders underscoring the complicated situation regarding diplomatic ties.

Responding to previous comments, a prominent government figure stated firmly that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Reports suggest that early stages of discussions were initiated, although their present status remains uncertain.

The maritime authorities stated it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its command to find the sailboats and secure the well-being of the sailors.

To date, there has been no official comment on the missing boats by the Cuban government.
