The Latest Relaxed Game Mode Sparks Intense Debates Regarding AI Players, XP Rewards, and Wait Times

Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios introduced a fresh game mode called Casual Breakthrough. To put it simply, this option mirrors the regular Breakthrough format but includes a few notable changes:

  • Every squad has just 8 human participants, with the remaining made up of AI-controlled opponents.
  • Activities performed by real players grant full XP, while AI activities provide reduced XP.
  • Just a pair of locations are available: Cairo Siege and Empire State map.
  • Elements like Player tags, achievements, and stat tracking are disabled.

So essentially, this mode delivers on its title: it offers a laid-back take of Breakthrough. At face value, one could assume there's nothing wrong, as it gives additional choices for gamers seeking different ways to have fun with the title. However, if video games has shown one thing, it is that not everyone will be happy. In other words, many Battlefield 6 fans are mad.

Player Responses: Anger to Support

"Gamers prefer human opponents. Avoid making the mistakes of your competitors," reads one reply to the official announcement. "Truly disappointing idea," says another. At the same time, in community forums, one user remarks, "I have no idea where we are headed with this game," while someone else lists all the issues they believe to be broken in the game: "Fix bugs, address drone issues, correct rocket mechanics, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, improve hit detection. We don't need this bot mode."

On the other hand, for every complaint, there are players explaining how much they're enjoying the new mode. "It's enjoyable to warm up, real players prevent it from being a complete grind but it's very relaxed," says one Reddit comment. "This subreddit doesn't understand that there are gamers who have lives and don't play this game 24/7. Let them strike a balance," states another. One reply via social media explains that as they're "a parent gamer with busy schedules, this is great for me," and another praises the mode for "avoiding intense competition."

Constructive Concerns and Player Input

Despite the support, players have constructive reasons to criticize the new mode. A few folks have highlighted that it will make queue times even longer for different playlists because of the sheer number of options currently available. On a similar note, some areas often face AI-filled matches in the current modes. It also seems a little backwards that the mode does not begin without a required amount of human gamers, even though it primarily centers on fighting AI opponents.

Lastly, a major complaints is that a previous feature was meant to provide complete rewards, including AI matches, but that was removed when they tried to eliminate XP farming from the mode. Thus Casual Breakthrough seems like the player base compromising in the middle, as per forum feedback. Another describes this addition as the devs "making a mistake so hard, I experienced so much fun in the first couple of days, why did they feel the need to change it?"

Looking Ahead: Adjustments Occur?

If Battlefield Studios has demonstrated something so far with the latest installment, it's that they're paying attention and acting on player input. Assignments being too difficult got fixed rapidly, as did the required Redsec challenges. Chances are that, if their data shows this recent mode is underperforming to their expectations, they won't be shy to change it again.
