The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Horror That Blends Silent Hill and Among Us Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of intriguing future games, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a young woman harboring multiple personalities inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Within her exist four separate souls, all possessing unique fears and motivations. These entities can take over at will, releasing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.
Based on revealed footage, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy hospital, while other scenes show the main character navigating a desolate church.
An Environment of Personal Dread
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to other people can activate a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The core gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul emerges at a particular moment. However, these identities will change against your will as you play. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the girl one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision
At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the lobby have enormous flowers where their necks are. Flowers are an ever-present theme, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the souls claims that the physical form belongs to them," explains a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player have deduced a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, since every entity can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The final entity standing might be a fraud. Either way, your choices are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
