Taliban Utilized Abandoned UK Technology to Track Down Afghans Who Worked With Western Troops, Inquiry Learns
A confidential source has told a parliamentary probe that the UK failed to secure classified devices allowing Afghanistan's rulers to track down Afghans who worked with western forces.
Information Leak Endangers Thousands at Risk
Person A, identified as Person A, testified that individuals impacted by the security lapse were instructed to change residences and change their mobile numbers to protect themselves from militant forces.
MPs are looking into official handling of a serious disclosure of personal details concerning almost nineteen thousand individuals who had applied to move to Britain to escape militant rule.
Data Disclosure Happened
A data file including confidential details, comprising identities, phone numbers and sometimes family information, was accidentally leaked by a worker employed at British military command in early 2022.
The leak was discovered only in August 2023, when details of nine people who had requested to settle in the UK appeared on online platforms.
Regime's Resources
Many believe there's a misunderstanding that militant forces do not have the same sort of facilities that we have,” Person A informed lawmakers.
Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; they possess it. Should they obtain your phone number, they can locate your precise location. That is what the unit did.”
Under inquiry about if militant forces owned sophisticated technology, Person A stated: “They've got everything.”
Aftermath of the Information Leak
Early investigations submitted to the inquiry estimated that approximately fifty family members and colleagues of people concerned by the leak had been killed.
A legal restriction regarding the breach was enacted in last year and prevented all details concerning it from being made public until recently.
Safety Measures
Because she was restricted, the whistleblower and the non-governmental organization she was working with advised individuals at risk they were supporting that they had “apprehensions that mobile communications had been intercepted”.
“We recommended that they moved when possible and changed their contact details. Those were the two main details that, should militant forces had access to these details, would lead to their location being found,” the source testified.
Challenged Assessments
The whistleblower disputed that an official review performed by a retired civil servant had been wrong to conclude that the obtaining of the information by militant forces was “not significantly alter present danger”.
“The important fact is that these individuals are in hiding from the Taliban; they remain concealed. Everything boils down to their previous employment.”
Person A described disturbing violence experienced by affected individuals, including electric shock torture, simulated drowning, and physical abuse.
“There are cases of toddlers who have had their arms broken to pressure the family to reveal locations,” Person A stated.
