New York Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”
The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “But I will say this, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”
New York police shared video stills Monday of a man sought in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt were reported.
The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday morning in the area between MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a baby.
“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate during the current season, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.
He joined the Jets as a free agent in spring and was expected to be a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on August 2 and was carted from the field.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in last year and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
