The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect who crafted a series of unforgettable images favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, including the pastel suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."

This news arrives shortly after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he began designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in designing sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including several ensembles for her US tour following her marriage.

After a career spanning more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Dramatic Impact: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a true visionary whose influence on fashion and music remains profoundly felt.
